The practice of Meg Vincent focuses on the dysfunctional relationship between manual DIY tasks and redundant artistic objects. She creates sculptural and cinematic works through the learning and application of DIY skills, reflecting upon her anxieties of graduating University being inexperienced in daily, household skills. The sculptures do not display complete success in her new found processes, they show an attempt. Although the sculptures are ‘finished products’ they could also be seen as ‘works in process’ as her skills are in no way perfected and are still developing.
The conceptual ideas often behind her works reflect upon the notion of ‘the decline of DIY’. This year, as she began to create more films she became less interested in cinematic production and more fascinated by the strange sculptures she had almost unintentionally created. The bizarre nature of the sculptures is emphasised through their redundancy. By applying extremely functional skills to a creative practice she ironically creates sculptures with no obvious use or purpose.
