India Pearce’s practice explores the materiality of film through working with multi-channel colour separation films, a technique that was used in early photography to create the first full colour images. As she works with film as a sculptural material, a single video transforms into a triptych, expanding the boundaries of the conventional cinematic frame. She explores how technologies reproduce colour and how we can dissect those technologies, breaking down the material aspects of everyday technologies that we often overlook. Our eyes have sensors for each of the RGB colours, and technologies are based on this; from the history of cinema to the present day of smartphones and TV screens, all technologies use RGB to create full colour images. There is therefore a critical relationship in the work between the human eye and these technologies, which imitate human perception.
