Material hierarchy, charged objects, relative aesthetics, false artefacts, tromp l’oeil and lucky charms are notions at the heart of Danielle Goulé’s current practice. Her works address the contemporary interest in ancient practices and the human tendency to search for meaning in objects. The slippery nature of truth in art is mirrored in the precarious nature of the assemblages which are created to stage her sculptural works. Materials are selected for their ambiguity, both in terms of their physical properties and their historical or financial value. Forms and modes of display are borrowed from the practices of astrology, mysticism and divination and are relocated into the context of art objects to create sculptural forms which function as art objects but are made redundant as magical ones.
